The Devil Cannot Touch Those Who Belong to God
In the first letter of the Apostle John, we are presented with a profound promise of God: “The one who is born of God does not sin, and the evil one cannot touch him.” But what does this truly mean? Let’s explore this powerful assurance and how it applies to our lives as followers of Christ.
What Does It Mean to Be Born of God?
To be born of God means to live under His grace and protection. It doesn’t imply that we are free from struggles or temptations, but that God, in His mercy, keeps us from remaining in a state of mortal sin. When we abide in Him, we are empowered to resist sin and walk in holiness. Those who are of God safeguard their hearts, staying vigilant against evil, and in doing so, the enemy cannot prevail against them.
Does This Mean We Won’t Suffer?
When we read about figures like Jeremiah, Job, and the Apostles, it’s clear that God’s people often endure great trials. Even saints like Padre Pio of Pietrelcina experienced intense spiritual battles, sometimes physically attacked by the devil. So, how do we reconcile this with John’s assurance that the evil one cannot touch us?
The key lies in understanding what the devil cannot touch: our soul and salvation. No matter the trials, the enemy cannot separate us from the love and saving grace of Jesus Christ. While our bodies and earthly possessions may suffer, our eternal hope remains secure.
Victory Through Jesus Christ
The enemy’s primary goal is to lead souls away from God. But for those who place their trust in Christ, the devil’s schemes ultimately fail. Jesus has already secured victory on the cross, promising eternal life to all who remain faithful. Even when life feels overwhelming, we can stand firm, knowing that “in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).
Why We Shouldn’t Fear
Fear is one of the enemy’s greatest tools. But as children of God, we have no reason to fear, for God’s protection is over us. While the enemy may attempt to rob us of peace, health, or material blessings, he cannot touch the hope and assurance we have in Christ.
