Whose life is life is recognized for her unshakable faith, her tireless commitment to serving others and her extraordinary ability to heal. In this way, Santo André continues to be a profound source of inspiration for millions of people around the world.

Born on August 9, 1845, in Quebec, Canada, Alfred Bessette, later known as Brother André, faced numerous challenges from a young age. Orphaned at the age of 12, he endured poverty and illness, yet remained steadfast in his belief in God’s providence. At the age of 15, he entered the Congregation of Holy Cross and took the name André.

Throughout his life, Saint André was known for his humility and devotion to Saint Joseph, the patron saint of Canada. Assigned to the role of doorkeeper at the College of Notre Dame in Montreal, he welcomed visitors with compassion and kindness, often listening to their troubles and offering prayers for their intentions.

Saint André’s reputation for miraculous healings began to spread, with countless individuals seeking his intercession for their ailments. Despite facing skepticism and doubt, he remained resolute in his faith, attributing all miracles to the power of prayer and the intercession of Saint Joseph.

In 1904, Saint André’s dream of building a shrine in honor of Saint Joseph became a reality with the construction of Saint Joseph’s Oratory on Mount Royal in Montreal. Today, it stands as a testament to his enduring faith and serves as a place of pilgrimage for millions of Catholics worldwide.

Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, Saint André Bessette’s feast day on January 6th is a time for reflection and celebration within the Catholic Church. His life reminds us of the power of faith, the importance of serving others with compassion, and the profound impact one individual can have on the world.
